Jack and Ellan celebrate the festive season with Mike O’Connor, former professional ice-hockey player and now the Commercial Manager for the Sheffield Steelers.
Born and raised in Canada, Mike came over to the UK 37 years ago to play ice hockey, starting in Durham and going on to represent Great Britain. Back in those days, it was a part-time profession, so Mike had to find something else to keep him busy and eventually wound up working for a sponsorship consultancy, staging and managing events for some big household names.
A common theme with all of our guests throughout this podcast series has been the value of relationships and building the right team, and Mike is no exception. Emphasising the importance of constantly striving to get better – “every event has to evolve” – his drive and passion are clearly evident.
Mike now runs the commercial team for the Steelers, raising sponsorship for the team, planning each match event and making sure that everybody has a great time, proudly proclaiming. Hear him explain why he feels he has “the best job in the world!”
